Accommodation

Accommodation on this expedition is not pre-booked or fixed in advance. The route is fully weather-dependent, and our daily plan, paddling distance, and overnight stops may change during the trip.

For this reason, camping is the main and recommended option, or at least carrying basic camping equipment so we can safely adapt the route. When conditions allow and we pass through villages, we can try to find rooms on the spot, but specific nights or locations cannot be guaranteed in advance.

The trip price does not include accommodation. If we find rooms during the expedition, a typical cost is around €45–60 per night for two people. Tent rental is available on request for €50 per 2-person tent; please let us know how many tents you need and whether you also need simple mattresses.

Experience Needed

The total distance covered is approximately 80 km over 4 days (about 20 km/day).
Prior experience with sea kayaks is required—specifically, the ability to maintain a straight line while paddling.
If you have no prior experience, we recommend taking a 2-day sea kayaking course before joining this trip.

Luggage and storage

Pack your trip essentials in multiple small dry bags (10–15L) and place them in a suitcase or rucksack.
You can leave the larger bag at a hotel near our base.
If you need an extra dry bag please get in touch.

Arrival and departure

We will meet at our base on Ilingas Beach at 10:00 AM.
There is plenty of secure (and free) parking if you are traveling by car.
You should arrive in Chania or Heraklion the day before. The closest airport with a bus connection is Chania.
During the summer months, there is a daily bus arriving just before 10:00 AM in Chora Sfakion, a village just 2 minutes away by car.
If you don’t have a car, you can call us and we’ll be happy to pick you up.
On the last day of the trip, we will return to Ilingas Beach in the early evening (4pm).
That will give you enough time to catch the bus back to Chania (departure around 7:00 PM), or you can overnight nearby and depart the next morning.

Accommodation and food

Accommodation is decided during the trip, not in advance. We normally camp, and when the weather and route bring us through villages we can look for rooms on the spot. Even if we hope to stay in a room on a certain night, the route may change and we may camp somewhere else instead.

The expedition is generally self-catered. We usually buy supplies together at the start, typically enough for one day because we can often re-stock. Breakfast and snacks are prepared by the group.

When we reach villages, we often choose to eat in a taverna instead of cooking; this is what we do most of the time. Lunch is also often possible in seaside tavernas when we pass through villages, so in many cases you only need to carry snacks during the day.

Some sections are more remote, so even if you prefer tavernas and do not want to cook much, you should still carry basic food and snacks. Each day, when I make the plan, I will tell the group whether we need to buy supplies.
There’s no need to carry more than 3 litres of water, as we’ll be able to refill during the day if necessary.

How do I book?

Please submit your booking through the South Chania Expedition booking form. We need some additional information from each participant before confirming the trip:

  • Your paddling experience
  • Your details including a phone where we can reach you via WhatsApp or Viber
  • Your body type (height, weight)
  • Your age and if there is any health issue that we might have to know
  • Whether you need to rent a tent, and whether you need simple mattresses

Once everything is confirmed, we will send you a payment link for the deposit through the booking system. The remaining payment is made either in cash on the day of the trip or by credit card online during checkout.
Payment with credit card the day of the trip is not possible.
