Sea Kayaking for Beginners in Crete
Crete’s south coast is one of the most dramatic and beautiful coastlines in the Mediterranean — towering limestone cliffs, sea caves, clear turquoise water, and beaches only reachable by sea.
The good news: you don’t need any experience to explore it by kayak.
This guide covers everything a first-timer needs to know before joining a sea kayaking trip in Crete.
Do I Need Experience?
No. For our day trips, no prior kayaking experience is required — as long as conditions are calm.
Before we leave the beach, beginners get a short on-water introduction: how to hold the paddle, basic strokes, how to steer, and what to do if you capsize. This takes about 20–35 minutes and is enough to get you moving confidently.
If sea conditions are unsuitable for your level, we reschedule. If rescheduling isn’t possible, you get a full refund.
Which Kayak Will I Paddle?
Beginners start in a double (tandem) kayak — more stable and more forgiving than a single.
If you feel comfortable after the introduction and conditions allow, you can switch to a single. Most first-timers are happy in the double for the whole day.
Our main kayaks are composite boats designed and built by Stelios — our guide and owner — under the 3kymia brand. We also carry kayaks from Nigel Dennis and Valley for those who prefer them.
What Does a Day Trip Look Like?
A typical beginner day trip covers around 14 km with plenty of stops — for swimming, snorkeling, exploring sea caves, and lunch at a coastal taverna.
The pace is relaxed. You’re never rushing. There’s time to look around, take photos, and stop wherever something catches your eye.
Groups are small — usually up to 6 people — so the guide can give everyone attention and adapt the route to the group.
The most popular beginner trip is the Sfakia–Loutro day trip, departing from Ilingas Beach near Chora Sfakion. It runs along one of the most sheltered stretches of the south coast and is explicitly suitable for families and complete beginners.
What Fitness Level Do I Need?
14 km of paddling over 5–6 hours is a real physical effort. You’ll use your arms, shoulders, core, and back throughout the day. People in good general health — including older adults and teenagers — complete it without trouble.
If you haven’t exercised regularly in a while, or if you have cardiovascular issues, joint problems, or concerns about your fitness for this kind of activity, contact us before booking. We’d rather discuss it upfront than have someone struggle on the water.
When Is the Best Time for a Beginner?
The calmest periods on Crete’s south coast are spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October). Seas are generally smoother, winds are lighter, and the weather is warm but not scorching.
July and August are busiest and windiest. The Meltemi blows from the north, and katabatic winds on the south coast can kick in from around 10am and persist until late evening (6–7pm). These conditions can make trips unsuitable for beginners. Trips still run in summer — we monitor conditions closely and only go out when it’s safe.
A quick guide using the Beaufort scale:
| Beaufort | m/s | km/h | Suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–2 | 0–3.3 m/s | 0–11 km/h | Ideal for beginners |
| 3 | 3.4–5.4 m/s | 12–19 km/h | We assess before going out |
| 4+ | 5.5+ m/s | 20+ km/h | Not suitable for beginners |

Want to Go Further?
A day trip is a great introduction. If you enjoy it and want to develop proper technique — efficient strokes, bracing, rescues, navigation — our Level 1 Sea Kayak Course is a 3-day course designed specifically for beginners with little or no experience.
It runs at Ilingas Beach in summer and at sheltered bays near Heraklion in other seasons.
